What about the M.R.
61Where Do I Go...When I'm 18
18 and ID(Mentally Retarded)
To most teens the highlight is the day you turn 18 years old. We all have plans or starting our lives, exploring foriegn lands, and moving out of good old Mom and Dads house. To the average person that sounds pretty much the "norm".
But to an individual with a ID diagnosis (Intellectually Disabled/MR) turning 18 can be a scary process. Alot of unanswered questions, or fears of stepping out into the unknown. So my question is my fellow "Disability Advocates"...Where do the MR go when they turn 18 and family and government funds have run out of energy and money?
The Belmont Residential Inn,Inc. a cognative group located in Fredericksburg, VA with four available spots and ready to accept any individuals with a primary diagnosis of MR/ID and the individual must have a casemanager in place. We are currently looking for a sponsor so we can financially support this group home and the assist in giving these people a better way of life.

Are there any grants of funds out there for ID/MR adults that are aging out of homes. My group home encourages the opportunity to care for these individuals.
I appreciate the interest. We at The Belmont Residential Inn take on this challenge of improving the lives of these individuals very seriously. We currently have a home nestled in a residential setting that is empty. We are searching for placements for our home. We offer daily assesment activities that are based off of each individuals Individual Service Plan.
There are over 250 different forms of ID/MR. So at The Belmont we take that in account to customize each individuals daily, weekly, and monthly goals.
We had two individuals placed in our home but after many weeks of finacially supporting our clients daily needs and getting redirected by casemanagers, or getting shut down because our clients did not qualify from not being on a 10 YEAR MR Waiver list, sad to say we had to discharge them. So again I ask...Where do the MR go? Now our client's are considered homeless...HOW CAN WE HELP???
I think this is a very compelling topic and one on which I'd like a lot more information. Could you expand on this hub and give more details, more background about your involvement?
Welcome to Hub Pages and I'll be following your articles, hoping to read much more about this subject.

Have you tried getting the word out to local media, churches, businesses? Always write to your Congress reps too, but local media can - if they will - do a lot.
Please keep this updated.
